|Dear Synod Assembly Corresponding Members,
We are rapidly approaching Synod Assembly on October 23rd and 24th. Since this is the first time that the Synod will hold the Assembly virtually, everyone in the Synod is invited to attend. If you are an Assembly Commissioner, YAAD, or Corresponding Member, you need to register as soon as possible so that you can receive your credentials to enter the meeting. If you are not in one of these categories, we invite you to join us on Facebook where Synod Assembly will be streamed live.https://www.facebook.com/SynodNE/
Pre-Assembly Oct. 22nd
The theme of this Assembly is “Standing in the Breach.” We are excited to have Rev. Traci Blackmon with us to begin addressing this theme on Thursday, October 22nd at the pre-assembly event. In the morning from 9:30 to 11:00, the title is “Story Matters” Rev. Blackmon will talk with us about how the historical, social, theological, and political narratives given to us from childhood to the present help shape our identity and understanding of the world. What stories help us and what stories harm us? Who owns the story and why does that matter? Whose stories are elevated and whose stories are silenced? What has the presence of some stories and the absence of others meant to the shaping of our faith and our communities? There will be time to discuss some of these questions and share them with one another. In the afternoon from 1:00 to 2:30, the title is “The Story of Race” which will likely be conducted as a town hall.
Everyone is welcome to attend. This is both a stand-alone event and one that will prepare us for moving into the theme of “standing in the breach” over the two days of assembly. Please make sure that you register if you wish to attend.
Synod Assembly Oct, 23-24th
Whether you are a commissioner, YAAD, Corresponding Member, or are attending assembly via social media, the documents for the assembly are public. For those attending by social media, you are welcome to review them if you wish ahead of time. Assembly will begin on October 23rd at 10:00 a.m. There will be various breaks including lunch. We expect the day will end by 4:30 p.m. Saturday, October 24th will begin at 10:00 a.m. and should end by 1:00 p.m. At the beginning of the documents, you will see a draft docket that shows how the two days will proceed. There will be plenty of good worship with Rev. Traci Blackmon preaching. You will see that the entire docket is laid out as a worship service with the Order of Worship in bold. This meeting form is called Worshipful Work. It reminds us why we gather and to whom we give praise.
We look forward to your joining us as the Synod community gathers and the commissioners and YAADs do their work.
