The following is an email from the Mercer County State Health Insurance Assistance Program Coordinator about a Medicare scam:

It has come to our attention that unscrupulous scammers are using the introduction of Medicare cards with new (random) numbers to take advantage of Medicare recipients to try and gain personal and financial information and/or to receive money.

In order to improve security, Medicare will be changing all Medicare numbers from the beneficiary’s social security number (plus a letter) to a random string of numbers and letters.  This is due to start in April 2018 but information about this is already available and scammers are using this to try and charge people for new cards and to request their existing number/bank details.  All new cards will be issued for free and our advice remains to protect your Medicare number as you would your social security number.

Click here for a flyer about the scam – and also a brief explanation that could be shared in a bulletin, newsletter or on a web page.  This is a horrible scam as it takes advantage of people’s fears of being without healthcare.  It is also very time specific as all new cards are expected to be issued by September 2018.

Thank you in advance for helping us to share this information – if you need any further information or Medicare beneficiaries have further questions about the new cards please do not hesitate to pass on my contact details.

Best wishes
